Flossing helps in preventing Gum disease

September 26, 2008 By Dr. Chetan 2 Comments

This is to highlight the facts that were given by the “Journal of Periodontology (JOP)”, dental floss when used, not just cleans the teeth edges and margins but is also responsible in prevention of gum diseases caused due to some virulent micro-organisms.

Flossing has been a practice more in the western countries, but eastern country people have been more prone to gum diseases because of the micro-organisms. And this has been due to some periodontal pathogens and cariogenic bacteria like Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia (previously T. forsythensis), Prevotella intermedia, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (previously Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans), and Streptococcus mutans.

Dr. Kenneth Kornman, editor or the Journal of Periodontology said in the Jornal,

“Twins tend to share the same or similar environmental factors such as dietary habits, health and life practices, as well as genetics. In this case, the only difference was flossing, and the outcome was significant. Flossing may significantly reduce the amount of bad bacteria in the mouth.”

This states that flossing should be made an integral part of oral health care, and it has to be made a habit along with brushing of the teeth.
